Whether its irrational or not is a frame-of-reference issue. Many really stupid policies are good for some, or in the short term, so might be considered 'rational' in terms of the self-interest of immediate beneficiaries. But obviously that's a false standard of rationality.

Growing up with the phrase “Wikipedia isn’t a valid source,” only to end up in a daily life where everyone says, “Just ask ChatGPT.”

It occurs to me that people have perhaps lost the lesson that *the past is a different country*. You cannot judge it by modern standards.

Oddly enough, this is seldom a problem in the sense that it allows us to ignore atrocities, because as it happens there are almost always contemporaries who saw the thing for what it was, and we do them a disservice to pretend that they were simply displaced moderns

@mattblaze @ChrisMayLA6 Indeed. There are lots of questions still to be answered. Arday himself hasn't been fully vindicated (and neither has Cambridge, of course) but many of his more extraordinary claims have turned out to be true...too late.

In any case, the hugely disproportionate scrutiny faced by a Black man as compared to his white colleagues was disgusting - and the fact Cofnas still has a job despite his own shoddy "scholarship" only compounds the injustice.
